Barbara Cartland

Barbara Cartland is one of Britain’s most famous and beloved novelists. She is known for cornering the market on Romance and wrote so many of them that the Guinness Book of World Records stated in 1983 that she was the top selling author in the world. She was also named by Vogue as the true Queen of Romance.
She was born in 1901 in Birmingham, England and started writing as a gossip columnist for the daily Express in the early 20s and then started to write romantic fiction, which she became famous for. By the mid 1990s she had sold over a billion books.
She had a daughter called Raine, who later grew up and in 1976 married the 8th Earl Spencer. He had children from a previous marriage one of whom, Diana Spencer later became Diana Princess of Wales.
Barbara Cartland had become such a public figure with her prolific writing, TV appearances and at public events that the Queen bestowed upon her in 19 the tile of Dame Commander of the Order of the British to honour her over 70 years of literary social and political contributions.
Ever concerned with the environment, she requested before she died that she be buried in a cardboard box rather than a wooden coffin and that wish was granted on her death just 6 weeks before she turn 99 years old in May 2000.
Barbara Cartland had a very distinctive style. She loved the designer Norman Hartnel and always wore his creations until her death. She was known for loving the colour pink so much that everything she wore except jewellery was a bright shade of pink!
Always with jewels pearls and elaborate hats, Dame Barbara Cartland was a very visible character with her platinum white hair and small fluffy dogs.
