Twiggy
In 1949 a girl called Leslie Hornby was born to a working class family in North London and grew up working in a hairdressers, as a shop counter girl and in factory not knowing what her life would turn out like.
When she was only 16 years old a man called Nigel Davies discovered her and offered her a modelling contract as she was a very unusual looking girl who epitomised the look of the ‘60s. She had large childlike eyes long lashes and he had only weighted 41kgs or 6.5 stones! Her nickname was Twiggy due to the fact that she was as thin as a twig and her short boyish hairstyle and unique looks led her to become the androgynous face of the swinging sixties, led by British Designer Mary Quant.
People thought that she would just be a passing phase but Twiggy modelled, sang and acted and very swiftly became an icon.
Now, in her sixties, she is still as popular as ever and still modelling occasionally.
